Get Support

Home-Start Caithness provides the following support for families in Caithness:

Family Support

We support any parent or carer who needs us, no matter what your circumstances.

Many parents may need friendship, advice or support during those early years when children are young.

There is no rulebook for raising a family and it can seem overwhelming, particularly if your family is going through difficult times.

But if you get family support when you need it, then day- to-day family life and your children’s future can be so much brighter.

We visit families like yours, providing kind, compassionate and confidential support. Home-Start volunteers are not judgmental. They are happy to listen and support you in many different ways.

Family Supported Group

Currently we run  supported family groups in Thurso on a Monday afternoon and Wick on Tuesday morning during school term time.  Play sessions, crafts, story time, singing and fun with your wee ones.

 We welcome new parents.

Dads’ Support

We deliver Time out for Dads, parenting sessions.

We also have a peer support group on our Facebook page for Dads and have informal chat sessions once a month over coffee and cake.

What to Expect from Home-Start

Home-Start help is completely free and confidential. There is no stigma attached to the help we provide and you decide how long you need the service.

We can support you with a mixture of practical help and emotional support. Your volunteer will usually visit you at home for a couple of hours each week and you can decide what happens. This could be helping you make or keep medical appointments; helping you to find out more about local services; accompanying you to a toddler group or just going for a walk together; or having a cup of tea and a chat at home, while your children play.

Our volunteers are not babysitters, home helps or trained counsellors; although they may give practical help looking after children and will always listen.

If you don’t want home visiting support then we are happy to offer a phone or text/video messaging service as well.

  • We work in partnership – with each other, with families and with other agencies.
